Martial
arts were originally created by warriors, to maim, kill and win
wars. The problem with modern martial arts is they seem to have
forgotten this. Most of the time martial arts instructors are
teaching techniques that won’t work in a real scenario. I worked
as a bouncer for 15 years and have studied the art of karate for
35 years. In all my fights on the door I have never had the time
to employ a complex martial arts move on someone who doing their
best to remove my head. I know of skilled cage fighters who have
wound up getting a good kicking because they were still reading
from the rule book. The truth is a seasoned street fighter with
no trained skills will easily beat a highly trained martial artist
with no street fighting experience. I’m not saying martial arts
are no good, I’m saying martial artists that have not been
pressure tested in real life situations or high intensity scenario
training are going to get seriously injured in a real life
encounter. One of the most popular martial arts at this time is
BJJ; it’s a highly skilled sport, yes sport! Don’t ever go to
ground in a street fight or you are asking for a good head kicking
from a couple of his mates. The aim of my training methods is to
bridge the gap between the dojo and the street.

Working
with real fighters
I
trained in martial arts for 15 years; I had tough fights hard
sparring and many cuts and bruises, but still felt untested in a
real sense, so at the age of 36 I went and worked on the door.
What the dojo can’t prepare you for is people coming at you who
really want to hurt you; people who will think nothing of pushing
a glass in your face or neck, stamp on your head and laugh as they
leave you in a pool of blood. Unlike the training hall or gym
there is no time to think when it kicks off. Most of the fights I
had, if I’m really honest I can’t remember what I did to win
them, but I learnt very quickly I did have to win them or I was
going to be messed up. The mainstay of my time on the door was not
in teams, but working one man doors and venues, when the fight was
on I had to win or there was a good chance I would be dead.
Scumbags are quite happy to play football with a bouncer’s head
once he’s down. The only person watching my back was me.
My
self protection methods are not just theory's tested out on
compliant training partners. They have been fully tested on
the pavement arena for 15 years
as a doorman, so I really do know what works and what doesn't.
